The Deutscher Eishockey-Bund (DEB) mourns Wolfgang Wunsch, who died on the night of June 13, 2018 at the age of 80.
Wolfgang Wunsch, who was known in many places as “Grandpa”, shaped ice hockey in Rostock and was always committed to his sport. As a player, he was active for SG Dynamo Weißwasser and SC Empor Rostock between the 1956/57 and 1969/70 seasons and played for the GDR national ice hockey team. As the world's oldest active ice hockey coach, Wunsch was with the Rostock Piranhas until 2014.
He is considered one of the most important people in Rostock ice hockey and was also instrumental in maintaining the sport at this location.
Franz Reindl, DEB-President: “We are deeply affected and very sad by the news of Wolfgang Wunsch’s death. He promoted ice hockey in Rostock and was always committed to it. The DEB and the entire German ice hockey family are thinking of his family and loved ones.”
