Mathias Niederberger is now eligible to play for the German national ice hockey team at the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The 25-year-old goalie Düsseldorfer EG was officially re-licensed yesterday and is therefore the third goalie in the team alongside Niklas Treutle and Timo Pielmeier DEB-Selection that can be used in the tournament.
The 1,80 meter tall goalkeeper has played 22 international matches so far and has been an integral part of the A squad at the Euro Hockey Challenge and since the 2015/16 season Deutschland Cup. However, Niederberger has never been on the ice in a World Cup game - so a game in Denmark would be synonymous with his World Cup debut game.
