The captain of the silver medal teams is moving after 18 years in the DEB-Jersey a final line
The captain is disembarking! Marcel Goc, who sensationally led the German national ice hockey team to the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang with the “C” on his chest, will officially end his international career today. The 34-year-old striker from the Adler Mannheim National coach Marco Sturm informed about this step in a personal conversation on Monday.
"This decision was not an easy one for me, as I have really enjoyed my time in the national team since my debut in 2000. I thought about it for a long time and finally came to the decision to make a clean break. It was always an honour for me to play for Germany and to be able to wear the "C" on my chest. My thanks go to all the companions who have crossed my path over the last 18 years. Both players and all staff members. Franz Reindl has accompanied and supported me all these years. I would also like to thank my family and my wife Susanne, who have always supported me, even in difficult times such as injuries. Now that I have won the silver medal, the time is right for me. I wish the boys and Marco Sturm all the best. I will always Fan of this team,” explained Goc.
Goc has competed in eight World Championships and three Olympic Games in his impressive career. During this time he scored 17 goals and 16 assists in 112 international matches for the German national team. By winning the silver medal on February 25, 2018, he celebrated the greatest success of his sporting career.
National coach Marco Sturm: “Marcel Goc’s importance for the German national team does not require much explanation. He was always a role model on and off the ice. His words in the dressing room carried weight. He has improved his teammates athletically but also in terms of character. A good captain embodies exactly these qualities. Marcel can look back on his national team career with great pride. A player and person of his caliber is difficult to replace.”
DEB-President Franz Reindl: “Marcel's exemplary career was characterized by top sporting achievements with an absolute role model character DEB National teams, the NHL and the DEL, but also from many serious injuries that now need to be treated specifically. He was always a proud national player and will be missed by the national team as a leader. As a long-time companion, I feel great gratitude for his great achievements and fully understand his decision to concentrate entirely on his future career in Mannheim after winning the historic silver medal.”
