2-1 after extra time against Switzerland / Seidenberg with the winning goal / Tomorrow again against Sweden
The German national ice hockey team is in the quarterfinals of the Olympic ice hockey tournament. The DEB- The selection defeated Switzerland 2-1 (1-0, 0-1, 0-0) after extra time. "It was a game with ups and downs," said national coach Marco Sturm: "The team showed its character in the last third and deserved to win in the end."
The game was only nine seconds old when the first unpleasant scene occurred. The Swiss striker Cody Altman checked Christian Ehrhoff in the head and consequently received a game misconduct penalty. The Cologne defender was only able to get back into the game in the second third.
However, the German team quickly took advantage of their numerical superiority when Leo Pföderl’s hidden shot from the blue line found its way through the legs of Swiss goalkeeper Jonas Hiller (2nd).
As a result, both teams played what was expected to be a hard-fought game. The German penalty killers in particular had to do hard work, as national coach Marco Sturm's team was outnumbered three times. However, Switzerland only had a few opportunities here, which goalkeeper Danny aus den Birken was able to thwart. Shortly before the break, the German team also had to cope with the loss of Gerrit Fauser, who was shot in the face.
Fauser also came back in the second third, but like his teammates couldn't prevent the quick equalizer. After four minutes it was Simon Moser who equalized the score to make it 1-1. In the period that followed, Switzerland had more of the game and pushed the pace while the DEB Selection hardly had any access in the duels. Towards the end of the round, the German team was able to free themselves from the pressure from the Swiss and set their own tone again. Seconds before the break, Brroks Macek even had the lead again.
The German team carried this momentum into the final third, in which the DEB- The choice initially determined the game. Dominik Kahun (44th) and Felix Schütz (46th) had further good chances. Ten minutes before the end there was trembling when Switzerland was able to play with the majority twice in a row. But here too, the German team proved to be insurmountable when they were outnumbered.
In extra time it only took 26 seconds for the winning goal. Dominik Kahun brought the disc to the goal, where Yannick Seidenberg was successful in the follow-up shot and scored to make it 2-1.
Tomorrow, Wednesday (13:10 p.m. CET), Marco Sturm's team will continue. Sweden will be the opponent again in the quarter-finals.
