David Wolf and Dominik Kahun scored in Germany's 2-1 win in Switzerland
The German national ice hockey team had a successful dress rehearsal before the Olympic Games (February 9th - 25th, 2018) in Pyeongchang: National coach Marco Sturm's team won against Switzerland 4.150-2 in front of 1 spectators in the Swiss Arena in Kloten ( 0:0, 1:0, 0:1, 1:0) after extra time and travels to South Korea with a sense of achievement.
“That was a good, fighting performance from my boys,” said national coach Marco Sturm: “For the most part we were happy. Unfortunately, we conceded a goal in the end due to carelessness. But ultimately it was a deserved success over the 65 minutes.”
Sturm preferred goalkeeper Danny aus den Birken over Timo Pielmeier against the Swiss. In addition, Björn Krupp took turns in defense and Marcel Noebels in attack took turns with their colleagues.
In Patrick Reimer's 100th international match, both teams initially neutralized each other. Aus den Birken had his man in the home team's chances, as did Switzerland keeper Jonas Hiller on the other side. Yasin Ehliz missed Germany's biggest chance after a remarkable solo effort.
Ex-NHL keeper Hiller was powerless after the first substitution when David Wolf made it 0-1. The striker moved in the neutral zone, left his opponent standing and skilfully finished from the slot to give Germany the lead.
This gave the increasingly stronger guests further self-confidence, so that the game shifted more and more towards the Swiss goal. However, another goal was not achieved despite further good opportunities from Patrick Hager and Felix Schütz.
After 40 minutes, Pielmeier came between the posts for Aus den Birken. The match remained intense in the final section, with both teams giving each other nothing and trying their luck on the offensive. The Swiss stepped up their game in the final phase and equalized through Ramon Untersander - Pielmeier had no chance. Dominik Kahun decided the match 18 seconds before the end of overtime.
On Wednesday there will be a short training session in the morning before the German team sets off for Munich Airport, where they will fly to South Korea in the afternoon.
