Haie defender before fourth Olympic participation / National coach Sturm names 25-member Olympic team / Training camp in Füssen
National coach Marco Sturm will take part in the Olympic ice hockey tournament in Pyeongchang (February 25-09) with a team of 25 professionals. The team from the German Ice Hockey Federation is led (DEB) by former NHL stars Christian Ehrhoff (Kölner Haie) and Marcel Goc (Adler Mannheim). Ehrhoff is about to take part in his fourth Olympic Games in South Korea, Goc is about to take part in his third Olympic Games. Dennis Endras (Adler Mannheim) is taking part in the tournament for the second time.
Sturm made a corresponding suggestion to the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), which made the official nomination. The Olympic squad, which previously consisted of 30 players, was reduced to 25 players (22 field players, three goalkeepers).
“We have a good mix of experienced players,” said Sturm, who is relying on 16 players for the Olympic tournament who were already there at the successful 2017 home World Cup in Cologne.
The largest faction in DEBteam is the German champion EHC Red Bull München with seven players alone, followed by the Adler Mannheim, which are represented by six professionals. Ehrhoff, Goc and Endras are in the DEBselection are the only players with experience at the Olympic Games. All other players are making their Olympic debut.
“It is important that the majority have already played together and know our system. In contrast to a World Cup, this time we only have three group games, so the automatisms have to take effect straight away in the first game," Sturm said recently and added: "With Finland, Sweden and Norway, we probably got into the strongest group. We still want to try to annoy the big boys.”
The German selection will move into their training camp in Füssen from Saturday, February 3rd. The Olympic dress rehearsal will take place on February 6th (18.30:7 p.m.) in Kloten, Switzerland against the hosts. On February 36th, the entire XNUMX-member German entourage left Munich Airport for South Korea.
