Great fight against strong Canadians: The women's national team lost to Canada 1:5 (0:1; 1:3; 0:1) and finished the 2018 Nations Cup at the Federal Performance Center in Füssen in 6th place.
As expected, the Canadian team started the game active and strong, so Franziska Albl was in the box DEB-Selection had to demonstrate all their skills right from the start. The first goal of the game came in the 3rd minute. Sophie Shirley was able to easily outplay Albl while standing free in front of the goal.
In the middle period, Team Canada promptly increased its lead by two more points. But the team led by women's national coach Benjamin Hinterstocker did not let this bother them and continued to work hard. The attack formation of Spielberger, Lanzl and Zorn in particular was able to create good chances again and again. In the 39th minute, the deserved goal made it 1:3. Julia Zorn scored from close range into the corner. But Canada restored the old three-goal lead before the second break.
Despite a great fight, they were unable to score another goal until the final whistle. There were just under six minutes left to play when Loren Gabel sealed the final score with her goal, making it 5-1.
Benjamin Hinterstocker, women's national coach: “In the last four weeks we have played a total of seven international matches, with around 28 players playing. On the one hand, we were able to achieve good results, especially in Finland, but on the other hand, individual players were also able to take a step forward. These are the positive developments that we need in order to ultimately be able to take a step forward as a team. Our goal is still the 2019 World Cup. We will meet in 14 days for the next two international matches and continue to work towards it.”
