Zorn: “We have to build on this tournament performance” / Home tournament Nations Cup in January 2018
The women's national team narrowly lost to hosts Finland 2:3 (0:0; 2:1; 0:1; 0:0; 0:1) after a penalty shootout in their fourth game within four days.
After a goalless first half, it was the Finnish women who scored the first goal in the middle third in the 27th minute of the game. Jenni Hirikoski beat goalkeeper Franziska Albl to take the lead. But in the power play that immediately followed DEB-Selection Marie Delarbre only needed a few seconds to equalize, so that the old distance was restored. There were six seconds left to play until the second break when Nicola Eisenschmid brought the German colors to cheers again with a pass from Julia Zorn and Anna Fiegert. The team led by women's national coach Benjamin Hinterstocker was able to manage the 2-1 lead until six minutes before the end of the game, before Susanna Tapani saved her team in overtime. After a goalless extra time, Jenny Hirikoski decided the game with her second goal of the evening, making the final score 2-3 from a German perspective.
The women's national team says goodbye to 2017 with a successful team performance. It continues from January 3rd to 7th, 2018 at the Federal Training Center in Füssen with the Nations Cup, where the DEB-Selection will face Sweden and Switzerland in the preliminary round.
Julia Zorn: “We were able to score points in three out of four games in a top-class tournament. All three of our goalkeepers showed very strong performances, as did the young players from the U18. We have to build on this tournament performance.”
Nina Kamenik: “Despite the fourth game in a row, we were able to play a strong game and thus demonstrate our quality. Strong team performance has repeatedly led to another point in the tournament. We can finish 2017 with confidence and build on our performance at the Nations Cup in January 2018.”
Jenny Harss: “We were able to score points in three out of four games in a very well-fielded tournament. I think we can be satisfied with this performance and it makes me confident for the upcoming tournaments this season.”
Andrea Lanzl: “Compared to the last international matches, we were able to improve again as a team and can therefore start the new year with a positive mood. During the course of the tournament, like against Finland, we were unable to take advantage of one or two power play opportunities to win the games after regular playing time. Nevertheless, I’m proud of our team management.”
