Despite a disjointed, hectic start, the... DEBselection scored the first goal of the game after eleven minutes of play. Leon Gawanke scored the 1-0 goal after a quick switch of play by the German defense on a pass from Charly Jahnke. The German game then became a little more structured again until the Hungarians found their way into the game better shortly before the end with two power plays.
The opponents carried the momentum into the second half and were able to equalize 1-1 in the 23rd minute out of the crowd. The DEBAs a result, the selection began to invest more again and was rewarded for it almost exactly halfway through the game. Valentin Busch, who had the advantage, coldly sank Gawanke's follow-up shot to take the lead again. The next goal came a good three minutes before the second break. Jahnke used a three-on-one counterattack to make it 3-1.
In the final section, things happened quickly. 43 seconds had been played when first Tobias Eder scored, then three minutes later Valentin Busch scored his second goal of the afternoon. The German team then had to concede a goal to make it 5-2, but Dani Bindels promptly increased it to 6-2, before Timo Walther sealed the final score 15-7 with his goal 2 seconds before the end.
Christian Kunast, U20 national coach: “We had a very difficult time getting into the game in the first third and didn't move well until we made it 1-0. The goal gave us a bit of peace. We weren't ready at the start of the second third, but we deserved to equalize. After that, we invested more in the game and the team realized in good time that this would lead to success through clear actions. In the last third we were able to win the game, also due to Hungary's weakening. We’ve done our homework for today and we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
