Youngsters Stefan Loibl and Andreas Eder before debut / Marcel Müller and Frank Mauer back / “Triple Gold Club” member Mikael Samuelsson again assistant coach
With the two debutants Stefan Loibl (Straubing Tigers) and Andreas Eder (EHC Red Bull München) and the returnees Marcel Müller (Krefeld Pinguine) and Frank Mauer (EHC Red Bull München), the German national ice hockey team starts the 28th season. Deutschland Cup from November 10th to 12th in Augsburg. National coach Marco Sturm has appointed three goalkeepers, ten defenders and 15 strikers to his 28-man squad for the renowned four-nation tournament in the Curt Frenzel Stadium.
“We have with that Deutschland Cup, the Olympic Games and the World Cup in Denmark, we have a season with great challenges ahead of us,” said Sturm and added: “The top-class tournament has been waiting for us in Augsburg for a long time. Russia, Slovakia and Team USA use it Deutschland Cup also in preparation for the Olympic Games and are traveling with correspondingly strong squads.”
Sturm is once again giving the youngsters a chance to show themselves on the international stage: The strikers Stefan Loibl and Andreas Eder are in the men's national team squad for the first time, after previously representing the youth national teams of the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) had gone through. After a long period of abstinence, the experienced professionals Marcel Müller and Frank Mauer are also returning to the circle DEB-Return selection. Local hero Thomas Holzmann is there from Augsburg.
Sturm's coaching team is supported by Tobias Abstreiter (Düsseldorfer EG) and Patrick Dallaire (EHC Red Bull München) for the second time by Mikael Samuelsson (40). The 803-time NHL player won the World Cup title and the gold medal at the Olympic Games in 2006 with his home country Sweden. In 2008 he won the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings. To date, there are only 27 players and one coach worldwide who belong to the legendary “Triple Gold Club”.
