U18 women lose to Russia
The German U18 women's national team lost their first game at the 3-nation tournament in Füssen on home ice with 1:5 (1:2; 0:1; 0:2) against Russia.
Right at the start of the game, the German team had the chance to take the lead in the power play, but it was the Russians who completed their first real attack when they were outnumbered to take a 1-0 lead after just under two minutes. An unfortunate hit, because a rushing German defender stopped the puck, which had bounced back from German goalkeeper Tatjana Pfeifer, into her own goal. In the 11th minute of the game, Oksana Bratishcheva used a power play to increase the score to 2-0 in the first period.
The German team came back onto the ice motivated after the break and showed some nice combinations. Sarah Kubiczek successfully completed one of them in the 22nd minute with a shot from the slot to make it 1-2, following an assist from Jennifer Miller. Even after that, the team of the coaching duo Kettner and Busch had good opportunities to equalize, but either Milena Tretyak was in the Russian goal or a Russian defender was there. After that, the pressure from the German team eased somewhat and Tatjana Pfeifer and her defenders became more and more the focus. In the 32nd minute, Pfeifer was powerless when Ilona Markova scored from a spot in front of the goal to make it 3-1 for Russia.
In the final third, Germany changed the goalkeeper as agreed, Pia Surke now guarded the German goal and was given a lot to do. The German team tried to set their own accents towards the Russian goal until the end, but even a situation with a majority could not be used to connect. When Elena Mezentseva scored out of the crowd in the 18th minute to make it 4-1 for Russia, the game was decided. With 20 seconds left, Polina Luchnikova deflected a shot from the blue line in front of the German goal to make the final score 5-1 for Russia.
The second and final game of the tournament will take place tomorrow at 10.30:XNUMX a.m. against Switzerland.
Franziska Busch, assistant coach of the U18 women's national team: “The girls showed good actions. Of course, you have to keep in mind that Russia plays in the A group of the top pool and is a different opponent than, for example, Austria. In our opinion, the result ended up being a bit too high. Tomorrow it’s time to build on today’s performance and end the course with a positive game.”
