Cologne, May 14, 2017 - The 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship (May 5 - 21) has had an outstanding audience response so far. In 42 of a total of 64 games, 431.000 spectators flocked to the LANXESS arena in Cologne and the AccorHotels Arena in Paris. Of these, around 282.000 spectators came to the games in Cologne. 149.000 visitors have seen the games in Paris so far. The average per game for the main venue Cologne is currently almost 13.500 spectators per game and for the secondary venue Paris it is around 7.100. This means that Paris is already clearly surpassing the values of last year's second venue, St. Petersburg, at the 2016 IIHF World Championships in the great ice hockey nation of Russia.
A particularly remarkable day was Saturday, May 13.5.2017, 55.239. On that day, a total of over 2010 spectators came to the LANXESS arena in Cologne for three games. Apart from special events such as the opening game of the 17.936 IIHF World Championships at Schalke, this has never happened before on a single game day at the modern-day IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships held in closed arenas. In addition, Cologne had the best-attended lunchtime game in recent IIHF World Championship history with XNUMX spectators.
Henner Ziegfeld, General Secretary of the Organising Committee of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, sees the audience development on the way to the desired goal: "Based on the ticket sales before the World Championship, we could assume that the German team would always play in front of a full house. That is what happened, but above all the large number of Fans of the other participating nations in the arenas has once again significantly exceeded our high expectations. They ensure a fantastic atmosphere at the games. Based on the development of the audience response so far, we now have our target of 600.000 spectators within sight."
