Only extension brings the decision / Italy waits on Saturday
Bitter defeat: The German national ice hockey team lost its fifth game at the 2017 IIHF Home World Championship in Cologne 2:3 (2:2; 0:0; 0:0; 0:1) after overtime against Denmark. The next game is tomorrow at 20.15:1 p.m. (live on SPORTXNUMX) against newly promoted Italy.
Sturm had called up Danny aus den Birken in goal for Thomas Greiss, who was still slightly injured. The goalkeeper was initially able to enjoy a 2-0 lead thanks to Patrick Reimer and Brooks Macek, before Frederik Storm and Morten Poulsen equalized within 25 seconds. Defender Moritz Müller no longer noticed this because he had to leave the ice injured and never returned.
The German selection created good chances in the second period, especially in the power play, but were unable to score any further goals. Keeper Aus den Birken, who shone several times, and his front men held their own when they were twice outnumbered for almost two minutes.
The final period was fiercely contested by both sides. In a dramatic final phase, Reimer had the winning goal seven seconds before the end, but the striker narrowly failed. As was the case against Slovakia, extra time had to be decided. Denmark had the better end here.
There's hardly any time to take a breather. The national team will meet Italy on Saturday (20.15:1 p.m., live on SPORTXNUMX). The southern Europeans are in last place in the group, but presented themselves as very tough opponents, especially against Slovakia and Latvia.

Draisaitl is followed by Grubauer – further NHL power for the German team
The Washington Capitals keeper is coming to Germany from the American capital on Saturday afternoon
After NHL star Leon Draisaitl (Edmonton Oilers), goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer from the Washington Capitals will also strengthen the German national ice hockey team at the 2017 IIHF Home World Championship in Cologne. The 25-year-old goalkeeper was eliminated with the “Caps” as was Draisaitl with the Oilers last Wednesday after seven games in the NHL playoff series against the Pittsburgh Pinguins.
Grubauer is also expected at Frankfurt Airport around midday on Saturday and will immediately travel on to the team. A possible appearance in the sixth tournament game against Italy (20.15 p.m., live on SPORT1) will only be decided at short notice.
