The German national ice hockey team suffered its second defeat in the third game of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in its own country. National coach Marco Sturm's team lost 3:6 (0:3, 0:2, 3:1) to record world champions and title favorites Russia on Monday in the once again sold out LANXESS arena. It was only around two hours before the start of the game that it was clear that Christian Ehrhoff would be able to play in the tournament for the first time. The captain saw a very bad start and his team's 0-1 defeat after just 64 seconds by Vadim Shipachyov from the bench. In addition, the match ended with a match penalty for Patrick Hager after just 14 minutes. Shipachyov with his second goal and Sergei Plotnikov made merciless use of the following power play.
From the second section onwards, the national team also had to do without Tobias Rieder. The striker returned to the dressing room after a short stint.
