World Cup dress rehearsal was a success: The German national ice hockey team won the last game during preparation for the home World Cup (May 5th - 21st) in Cologne. In front of 3.300 spectators in the sold-out Ravensburg ice rink, national coach Marco Sturm's team beat Latvia 3:2 (0:0, 1:0, 2:2) on May Day. Things will get serious next Friday when the World Cup opener against Team USA is on the program.
For the first time since the Olympic qualification in September last year, Dennis Seidenberg was in the German squad. The New York Islanders defender joined Cologne's Moritz Müller. Tobias Rieder from the Arizona Coyotes made his second appearance during this year's preparation.
Like the day before, they saw Fans In Ravensburg it was a really fast game from the start with chances on both sides. However, the first goal should only come after the first change. All the more worth seeing: Frederik Tiffels curved through the entire Latvian team and pushed in sideways to give the German lead 1-0. The Cologne native had already celebrated his first international goal the day before.
What works once could also work a second time, thought the cheeky Tiffels in the last section. The striker basically copied his goal from the second period to make it 2-0 for his colors. After the interim 2-1 win by Razgals, Dennis Seidenberg was also able to celebrate as a goalscorer. A good few minutes before the end of the game, the frame saved the game, but even a well-disposed Danny from the Birken in the German box couldn't prevent Latvia's second goal of the evening. And so Lauris Darzins made the final score 3-2 from a German perspective.
That evening, the national team traveled from Memmingen Airport towards Cologne and moved into their World Cup quarters there. After a day off, the team will hit the ice at the LANXESS arena for the first time on Wednesday.
