U16 women on the way to the European Cup

The German U16 women's national team will take part in the event from 27th to 30th. April 2017 took part in the European Cup in Budapest (Hungary). At the beginning of the 2016/17 season, numerous nations, including Germany, Hungary, Austria and Switzerland, decided to carry out international comparisons for the younger age groups in addition to their U18 program in order to promote work, especially in the lower age range. Therefore, the European Cup will be played for the first time this year. The Hungarian association is committed to this after an excellent organization of the IIHF U18 Women's Ice Hockey World Championship Div. I was available again as an organizer last January. Within four days, the nations play four games in the “everyone against everyone” mode within their group as well as a crossover game against the tied team from the other group. Group A consists of Finland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Switzerland, while Russia, Hungary, Austria and Germany play against each other in Group B.

This tournament is just the beginning of international competitions within the new age group. In February 2018, Germany will host a 4-nation tournament for U16 women. In addition, further international matches are planned for the 2017/18 season.

U18 women’s national coach Tommy Kettner: “We are looking forward to this first top-class tournament in the new U16 women’s age group. The team prepared intensively in Bad Tölz and left a good impression. With Russia, Switzerland and Hungary we have a strong group. We will prepare the girls as best as possible for every opponent. Comparing ourselves with other nations gives us a good opportunity to see where we are in the age group at international level.”
