Youngster Jakob Mayenschein celebrates his first international goal in the 1:5 win against Norway
The German national ice hockey team lost the first warm-up game for the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Cologne (May 5th - 21st) despite a courageous performance by its four debutants and the first international goal by newcomer Jakob Mayenschein. The team of national coach Marco Sturm lost 1:5 (0:2, 1:2, 0:2) to hosts Norway on Thursday as part of the Euro Hockey Challenge in the "Kristins Hall" in Lillehammer. The second duel will take place at the same venue on Saturday.
Pascal Zerressen, Jakob Mayenschein, Frederik Tiffels and Maximilian Kammerer must have marked April 6, 2017 in their calendars. Sturm had all four youngsters play for the national team for the first time against Norway. Mayenschein, Tiffels and Kammerer even formed a joint line of attack. Meanwhile, Zerressen joined his experienced Cologne teammate Christian Ehrhoff on defense. Timo Pielmeier was preferred in goal over Dennis Endras. Sinan Akdag, David Wolf, Philip Gogulla, Patrick Hager and Mathias Niederberger took a break as agreed.
The hosts included the two ex-DEL pros Mathis and Ken-Andre Olimb. Their teammates Andreas Stene and Patrick Thoresen in the power play ensured the Norwegians took a 2-0 lead despite an even first period. In the second period, the German selection's improved performance was rewarded: debutant Mayenschein was in the right place and deflected a slap shot from Marco Nowak into the net. Captain Ehrhoff appropriately secured the puck for him. Shortly before the second break, however, Norway scored for the third time. Mathis Olimb's goal to make it 4-1 in favor of the Norwegians shortly after the restart sealed the deal. Brother Ken-Andre made the final score 5-1.
After a day off, the second duel with the Norwegians will take place on Saturday (08.04.2017/18/15, 18:10 p.m., from 1:19 p.m. in the internet live stream on SPORT15). In addition, the station broadcasts live on free TV from 1:XNUMX p.m. SPORTXNUMX will show all other six games of the Euro Hockey Challenge live on free TV.
National coach Marco Sturm: "We certainly imagined the start of the preparations to be different and saw that we had not yet found our rhythm due to the players' long break. Nevertheless, there were also some positive things. I am happy with my four debutants. We will now continue to work and improve step by step."
