The German women presented themselves very well in their preliminary group. After their 3-1 opening win against Sweden, they defeated a powerful Czech team 2-1 and qualified for the quarter-finals after the second preliminary round game. In the third game, coach Benjamin Hinterstocker's team lost 2-4 against Switzerland. Despite this defeat, the... DEB-Women took first place in their preliminary group B and will now face the fourth-placed group A – Russia.
The Russian team also won the opening match. The Russians turned a 0-1 deficit against Finland and celebrated a last-minute victory. However, the two following preliminary round matches were clearly lost against high-class opponents: They suffered a 0-7 defeat against the Americans, and the defeat against Canada was even one goal higher.
Women's national coach Benjamin Hinterstocker said after the defeat against Switzerland: “In this World Cup we have to concentrate for 60 minutes in every game in order to be successful. Tomorrow we will try to show our maximum performance again in the quarter-finals.”
