“Schull- un Veedelszöch” at the Cologne Carnival in the spirit of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship
Carnival Sunday, known in Cologne dialect as “Fastelovends Sundaach”, is a very important date in the Cologne carnival. Traditionally, the so-called “Schull- un Veedelszöch” parade through the city on the same route as the big Rose Monday parade. This year, Carnival Sunday falls on February 26th. And a very young walking group will take part in the parade, which will march through the city in the spirit of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Cologne and Paris (May 5th to 21st). From 10.30 a.m. from the Südstadt towards the cathedral.
The kids clubs Kölner Haie and the Bundesliga football club 1. FC Köln are joining forces under the motto "Uns Pänz in Kölle und d'r Welt" (Our children in Cologne and the world), under the sign of the puck. 60 children aged 6 to 14 will wear international ice hockey jerseys with the logo of the 2017 IIHF World Championship, as well as black foam headgear in the shape of a puck - on top of which will be either a small figure of the Cologne Cathedral or the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The idea for this carnival ice hockey march came from 1. FC Köln, says Nikolaus Socha from the Kids Club of the Kölner Haie"They said that the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship would be a great thing for all of Cologne." The Sharks obviously agreed. And that's how the project came about.
The Organising Committee of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship is supporting the parade with a variety of equipment and props. The kids are not just dressing up. They will throw “Kamelle”, or sweets, with the logo of the 2017 IIHF World Championship into the crowd. Sharky, the mascot of the Ice Hockey World Championship that is popular with the kids, will also be there. Kölner Haie, and his girlfriend Sharkeline belong to the sporty foot group, as do Billy Goat Hennes, the mascot of 1. FC Köln (with actors in costume), and of course Asterix & Obelix, the official mascots of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. So you can be sure that the children will have a lot of fun. Further information about the train can also be found at www.haie-kids.de.
The “Schull- un Veedelszöch” can be admired not only live in Cologne. WDR broadcasts this parade just as extensively and live as the big Rose Monday parade the day after, both on television and on the radio.
