The German U18 women's national team lost its first game at the 2017 IIHF U18 Women's Ice Hockey World Championship 2:3 (1:1/1:0/0:2) against Norway.
The German U18 women had to accept a deficit early on. In the second minute of the game, the Norwegians took the lead 1-0 through Ingrid Berge's follow-up shot. The German women then had a few good chances to score. In the 13th minute of the game, Celina Haider ran towards the Norwegian goal alone and equalized with a half-high shot on the side of the stick, making the score 1-1 at halftime.
The second third began with more chances for the Norwegians before the German team was able to take a 37-2 lead through Lilli Welcke in the 1th minute. She was exactly right when Sarah Kubiczek shot a low shot and converted the follow-up shot ice cold. The German team continued to try to extend their lead and still had a few good chances, but no further goals would be scored until the break.
12 minutes had been played in the final third when the Norwegians, who had the advantage, were able to equalize through Emma Bergesen. Just three minutes later, once again outnumbered, they took the lead 3-2 through Emilie Johansen. The German team tried to equalize, but shortly before the end they were unable to score a goal despite being outnumbered and taking out the goalkeeper.
Tommy Kettner, U18 Women's Federal Young Talent Coach: “We found our way into the game late today and had to chase a deficit early on. In the second third, the girls dominated the game for a long time. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to keep up our performance until the end and had to accept the two decisive goals when we were outnumbered. Now it’s time to clear your head and get back to the form you showed over the course of the current season tomorrow.”
