DEB-Women take second place in Group A / Tomorrow against Russia
The German women's national team lost to Canada in the last preliminary round match of the Nations Cup with a clear 0:5 (0:1/0:2/0:2) and finished the preliminary round group A in second place. On Friday evening, the German women's national team met Canada in the last preliminary round match of Group A in Füssen. After both teams had won their first two matches, the match was about reaching the final of the Nations Cup.
It was clear that the Canadians wanted to take revenge for the 3-2 defeat in the preparatory game. They set a high pace from the start and the German backline around goalkeeper Ivonne Schröder had to work hard to hold their ground. They survived DEB-Women even harm a 3-5 minority. The first goal came in the 14th minute: Sarah Lefort pushed the ball over the line for the North Americans from close range. But the German women also had opportunities to compensate. Tanja Eisenschmid tried twice in the power play from the blue line, but the puck narrowly missed its target each time.
The start to the middle third also went better for the guests. After just under two minutes, Victoria Bach increased the score to 2-0 for the maple leaves. When Emily Clark scored with a follow-up shot (33rd minute), the preliminary decision had been made. With a double strike within 60 seconds in the final period (46th/47th minute), the Canadians finally increased the final score to 5-0.
Women's national coach Benjamin Hinterstocker: “The Canadian team was in very strong shape today. We followed our game plan for over 60 minutes and presented ourselves very well. We were able to defend the 14 minutes when we were outnumbered without conceding a goal.”
Rebecca Graeve: “Despite the great strain of the last few days, we held up well with our team spirit and fought until the last minute.”
