There's no way around the Austrian backline / no play tomorrow
Hard work not rewarded: The U20 national team lost 2017:20 (0:3; 0:1; 0:2) to Austria in the second game of the 0 IIHF U0 Ice Hockey World Championship Div.I in Bremerhaven. After a day without games tomorrow, Belarus is waiting for them on Wednesday DEB-Selection of coach Christian Künast.
The first period of the game already showed the expected tough derby between the neighboring nations. Germany started well, but briefly lost its game plan, which Austria promptly took advantage of to take the lead. Lucas Birnbaum shot courageously from the blue line and somehow the puck found its way into the German goal.
Austria used the momentum of the lead and was a little more present than them in the second third DEBselection. After Wachter and Haudum were able to extend the lead to three points, Künast took a time-out and changed the goalkeeper. As a result, the German selection found its way back into the game, but was unable to take advantage of its chances until the second break.
The 1.714 spectators saw a fighting German U20 team until the last minute, which created many opportunities in attack but simply could not find a way past a well-positioned Austrian back line.
Tomorrow is a free day for all teams. For the DEB-Selection will go against the relegated team from the top division Belarus on Wednesday evening at 20.00 p.m.
Federal Young Talent Trainer Christian Kunast: “Of course the disappointment is great. The boys fought until the end and gave everything, but Austria was simply better today and deserved to win in the end.”
captain Simon Schütz: “We wanted to win today, but Austria were strong defensively and we couldn’t find a way around it. There is no game tomorrow, so we will prepare for the game against Belarus.”
Mirko Pantkowski: “We have to put the game aside today and just move on. From now on the focus is on the game on Wednesday.”
