German selection loses to Canada at the end of the tournament with 1:3
The German national ice hockey team has the Deutschland Cup in Augsburg in third place. The team of national coach Marco Sturm lost 3:1 (3:0, 3:0, 0:1) in the last tournament match against "Team Canada" on Sunday. For the first time since 0 and 2014, the title did not go to the host. Slovakia had already secured victory in the tournament by midday with a 2015:4 victory against Switzerland. The Slovakians were thus able to win all three matches. Switzerland came fourth.
The 3-2 win against Switzerland the day before had left its mark. Yasin Ehliz (Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers) and Benedikt Kohl (ERC Ingolstadt) had to fit when attached. Felix Schütz (Rögle BK), Philip Gogulla (Kölner Haie) and Justin Krueger (SC Bern) were not there, so the squad basically formed itself.
At least Sturm was able to field seven defenders and twelve strikers on Sunday afternoon. Niklas Treutle (Krefeld Pinguine) made his first appearance between the posts on the third day of the tournament.
The keeper saw his front men get off to a good start, but as the playing time increased, the guests got better and better into the game. The result: Ex-DEL professional Kevin Clark scored a brace and former NHL star Derek Roy gave the “Maple Leaves” a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.
The national team went a step further at the beginning of the middle period, but the Canadians also remained dangerous. Treutle, however, showed himself to be in an excellent position on several occasions. “We are actually level in the second half,” said striker Thomas Greilinger after 40 minutes.
In the final section, the German selection once again mobilized all their reserves of strength and were rewarded: Greilinger put a shot under the crossbar. It was the first Deutschland Cup-Goal by the Ingolstadt striker at all. Kai Hospelt had the second goal a little later, but narrowly missed. In the end, Sturm took Treutle off the ice, but the longed-for connection did not materialize.
National coach Marco Sturm: “I am very satisfied. It wasn't easy for the boys. You had to learn a lot of new things, it doesn't happen so quickly. Everyone was very committed. You can't change much in three days, but the boys got involved. I've seen a lot of good things. The boys played eight of the nine periods very well. I saw some alternatives.”
Goals: 0:1 Kevin Clark (5:23), 0:2 Derek Roy (17:24), 0:3 Kevin Clark (18:11), 1:3 Thomas Greilinger (45:49)
