National coach Sturm nominates Abeltshauser and Kastner / “Important part of the World Cup preparation” / Jochen Hecht assistant coach
Ice hockey national coach Marco Sturm has announced his squad for the Deutschland Cup from 4th to 6th November 2016 in Augsburg. The squad of the German national team, which will face Slovakia (4.11th November / 19.30pm), Switzerland (5.11th November / 19.30pm) and Team Canada (6.11th November / 16.30pm) in the four-nation tournament in the Curt Frenzel Stadium, consists of 26 players (three goalkeepers, eight defenders, 15 strikers).
“We want to take the momentum from previous tournaments with us and get ahead of our own Fans of course in top shape," said Sturm, who nominated two national team debutants from the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) in addition to experienced players and some well-known returnees.
Defender Konrad Abeltshauser from the reigning German champions EHC Red Bull München can also hope for his first international appearances in the Adler jersey, as can his teammate and talented striker Maximilian Kastner.
In Augsburg, the selection of the Deutscher Eishockey-Bund (Deutscher Eishockey-Bund eV) would like toDEB) confirm their rising shape curve. After reaching the World Cup quarter-finals in Russia and successfully qualifying for the 2018 Olympic Games (Pyeongchang) in Riga a few weeks ago, the national team is presenting itself in front of its own audience for the first time.
Jochen Hecht is there for the first time as an assistant coach. The Mannheim native played 892 games in the North American professional league NHL and 92 games in the jersey of the German national team and ended his active career with the Adler from Mannheim in the summer.
Compared to previous measures, national coach Sturm has deliberately changed his squad in several positions and, in addition to the debutants, is once again relying on numerous top performers from the DEL. “The Deutschland Cup is already a very important part of the preparation for the 2017 home World Cup in Cologne. All players get the chance to recommend themselves for further tasks,” said Sturm with regard to the World Cup in his own country.
With Sinan Akdag and David Wolf from Mannheim, Gerrit Fauser from Wolfsburg and the Swedish legionnaire Felix Schütz (Rögle BK), four players are in the squad who also took part in the Olympic qualification in Riga at the beginning of September. With four nominations each, the Kölner Haie as well as the Adler Mannheim currently most players.
The Deutschland Cup will be held in Augsburg for the second time after its premiere in 2015. A total of around 27.000 spectators came to the Curt Frenzel Stadium for last year's games. The national team starts the tournament again as defending champions.
All games will be broadcast exclusively and live on SPORT1.
