Arizona Coyotes forward suffered an medial ligament injury and is heading home today
Tobias Rieder of the Arizona Coyotes is no longer available for the German national team at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in St. Petersburg/Russia. The 23-year-old striker suffered a ligament injury to his left knee in the group match against Team Canada and will probably have to be out for four to six weeks, according to team doctor Dr. Peter Prodinger (Klinikum Rechts der Isar, Munich). The injury is a partial tear of the medial ligament.
Rieder had an unfortunate collision with NHL superstar Corey Perry (Anaheim Ducks) during the second period of the 2:5 loss against Canada and was forced to end the game early. Rieder watched the 5:2 victory against Belarus from the stands.
“This failure obviously hits us hard,” said Marco Sturm: “Tobias is an important part of the team on and off the ice. We now have to move even closer together as a team.”
Tobias Rieder: “Having to leave the World Cup with an injury is of course particularly bitter. Especially since we've been getting better and better in the tournament lately and I would have liked to help the team on their further path. I keep my fingers crossed for the boys and hope that they can win the next two games.”
Rieder will begin his journey home to Germany this afternoon.
