“Declared ready immediately” / New York Islanders keeper will join the team on Wednesday
The German national ice hockey team can count on further reinforcements from the North American professional league NHL at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in St. Petersburg/Russia: Goalkeeper Thomas Greiss from the New York Islanders gave national coach Marco Sturm the confirmation of his participation in the World Cup on Tuesday evening .
“Thomas immediately signaled his willingness to help our team. Final details with his employer have already been clarified, so he will arrive in St. Petersburg during the day on Wednesday,” said Sturm. Greiss and the Islanders failed in the NHL quarterfinals against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday night.
Greiss, who plays for the DEL Kölner Haie and the Hannover Scorpions and last wore the Eagle jersey at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, made his breakthrough in the NHL this season. At the beginning of March, the 30-year-old even became the best NHL goalie and defended with a Fangrate of over 93 percent fired the most shots. For the first time in 23 years, the Islanders were able to qualify for the quarterfinals thanks to Greiss' performance.
