Squad grows to 31 players / national coach Marco Sturm: “We will rotate again”

With the players of the German champions EHC Red Bull München as well as runner-up Grizzlys Wolfsburg from the German Ice Hockey League (DEL), the national ice hockey team is entering its final phase of preparation for the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in St. Petersburg (May 6th - 22nd, 2016).

Accordingly, the Munich master players Daryl Boyle, Yannic Seidenberg, Frank Mauer and Dominik Kahun is also in the squad, as are Wolfsburg's Felix Brückmann and Gerrit Fauser.

Including the six DEL finalists, national coach Marco Sturm's squad increases to an impressive 31 players. Three goalkeepers, ten defenders and 18 strikers will move into Oberhausen. “We will rotate like we did last time in Latvia and try out different variants with different formations in both games against Belarus,” said Sturm before the German selection’s last two appearances in front of their own audience.

Marcel Goc will be missing in Oberhausen. The national team captain recently suffered a minor injury to his elbow and will therefore be sidelined this week. “This is purely a precautionary measure. Marcel is returning to the team for the dress rehearsal in Switzerland,” assured Sturm.

For Bernhard Ebner, however, the World Cup dream has shattered. The Düsseldorf defender suffered a shoulder injury in Latvia, which resulted in a compulsory break of around six weeks. Justin Krueger (SC Bern) will also not be able to travel to St. Petersburg due to a broken finger. The defender Sturm announced this in a personal conversation.
