The World Cup of Hockey is entering the third round
This year, the traditional World Cup of Hockey (WCOH) will be held in Toronto from September 17th to October 1st, 2016.
The WCOH was held for the first time in August and September 1996. The six best teams in the world competed, supplemented by two wildcard participants. The winner was the USA national team, which beat Canada in three finals. Germany also took part in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and surprisingly defeated the Czech national team, which had travelled with many NHL players, 7:1, but then lost in the second round to the hosts Canada.
At the World Cup of Hockey 2004 from August 30th to September 14th, the six best teams according to the IIHF world rankings at the time and two wildcard participants also competed against each other. Due to the appointment before the start of the season, the coaches were again able to rely on all NHL stars.
After the NHL regularly released its players for the Olympic Games starting in 1998, the World Cup of Hockey increasingly fell out of focus and was put on pause. The tournament will only be held for the third time in 2016. The venue is Toronto and, in contrast to previous tournaments, is the only one.
DEB-President Franz Reindl has been appointed President of Team Europe at this traditional tournament. Former German national player Ralph Krueger was named as coach and long-time Slovak NHL superstar Miroslav Satan was named manager of the top European selection.
A total of eight teams are taking part in the World Cup of Hockey, which was last held in 2004. In addition to the nations Canada, USA, Sweden, Russia, Finland and the Czech Republic, a U23 selection made up of young talented US and Canadian players is also taking part. "Team Europe" will be a mix of the best players from Germany, Slovakia, Switzerland, Denmark, Belarus, France, Latvia, Norway and Slovenia. More than 150 NHL professionals are expected to take part in the World Cup of Hockey.
