Kettner: “Given everything to win” / Setback: Japan achieves promotion
The U18 Women's National Team defeated host Hungary 2016:18 (7:1; 2:0; 4:0) in the fourth game of the 1 IIHF U1 Women's World Championship.
Although we were able to celebrate a clear victory for the German team that evening, we still looked at the table with a tear in our eyes. In the previous game, Japan defeated Slovakia, denying Germany the chance of promotion back to the top division.
The German U18 team, playing in white, initially started the game somewhat slowly, but was the dominant team on the ice from the start. Even before the first break, Pia Clauberg (8th minute) and Larissa Eicher (19th minute) were able to put the German team ahead by two points.
U18 women's coach Kettner changed the ranks after the first period and gave Sandra Abtreiter her World Cup debut in goal for the DEB-Selection. The plan worked and the goals came. Larissa Eicher scored two more times, and Marina Swikull and Sorsha Sabus also joined the list of goalscorers.
In the final period, the hosts from Hungary were able to score a consolation goal in the majority, but just ten minutes before the end of the game, Lea Welcke's goal sealed the final score of 7-1 from the German perspective.
After a day without games tomorrow, the last game is against Slovakia on Saturday (January 16.01th) at 12.30 p.m. The two teams will play for second place in the tournament in this game.
Tommy Kettner, U18 women’s national coach: “The result reflects the way the game went and we are of course happy about the victory. Nevertheless, the disappointment about missing out on promotion to the top division is greater. I can’t blame the girls, they’ve given everything to win in every game here so far.”
