After the 3:4, Germany is in fourth place in the final standings
It wasn't meant to be: The U20 national team lost the last game at the 2016 IIHF U20 Ice Hockey World Championship Division I in Vienna. BundeYoung talent coach Christian Künast's team lost to Norway 3:4 (0:0, 3:0, 0:3, 0:0, 0:1) after a penalty shootout and thus took fourth place in the World Cup.
Both teams really wanted to win the last group game and were on equal terms from the start. The German selection was visually superior and sought salvation on the offensive. But even with a double majority, they initially couldn't do more than hit the post.
This was used in the middle section DEB-Team then its chances. Christoph Körner scored the first goal. A few minutes later, Manuel Edfelder and Julian Napravnik also joined the scorers list.
The 3-0 lead after 40 minutes, however, didn't last long: Norway stepped up their game in the final period and made it 3-2 with two quick goals before the 3-3 equalizer came two seconds before the end.
After a goalless extra time, the Norwegians won the game with two goals in the penalty shootout and thus secured third place in the table.
Christian Künast, BundesYoung talent trainer: “The game reflects the entire tournament. There are just too many problems for us in some respects. At this level it will ultimately cost you victory. Complaining doesn't help us. Now we have to work together to be better prepared for the future.”
Andreas Eder (EHC Red Bull München): “Of course, not only today's result, but even more so our performance here at the World Cup didn't go the way we imagined. We have planned much more. Today we played well and wanted to run out the time in the final third, but then we made stupid mistakes.”
John Rogl (EHC Red Bull München): “We didn’t show our best performance. We can do better, I know that. Our use of opportunities was simply too poor. We were also too confused on defense time and time again.”
