Game for third place today against Norway / Latvia is almost certain to be promoted
Finally against Norway: Today (20:16.30 p.m. / Live on LAOLA1.tv) the U2016 national team is fighting for third place in the final game at the 20 IIHF UXNUMX Ice Hockey World Championship Division I in Vienna. “We want to show character until the end of the tournament and win the game today,” said Federal Young talent coach Christian Künast.
The German selection missed the chance of direct promotion back to the top division with two wins and two defeats. Last Wednesday they lost DEB-Selection host Austria in a hard-fought game with 1:3. Just one day later the game against Latvia was scheduled. But the Germans had nothing to gain against the favorites either. And with the defeat against Latvia, the chance of direct promotion was missed.
“The defeat against Austria was very, very bitter,” summed up Künast. “I can’t blame the boys. They gave everything and wanted to win, but unfortunately we didn’t use our chances effectively enough.”
After a clear win against Italy, a defeat against Austria and further defeats after penalty shootouts against Latvia and Kazakhstan, Norway has a total of five points. Germany is currently in third place with six points. For both teams, today's game is about third place at this year's Division I World Cup.
If Latvia gets at least one point in today's game (13 p.m.) against relegated Italy, they will be assured of promotion. Austria certainly also has the silver medal. In the event that Latvia leaves three points and Austria wins against Kazakhstan (20 p.m.), Austria would still have the opportunity to move up.
