Mayenschein with two scorer points / Künast: “We have to become more callous”
Victory in game two: The U20 national team also won the second game at the 2016 IIHF U20 Ice Hockey World Championship Division I in Vienna. The team led by BundesYoung talent coach Christian Künast won 2:1 (1:0, 1:1, 0:0) against Italy.
The German team started the game powerfully and with significantly more possession. In the eighth minute of the game, the work of the DEB-Selection rewarded: A shot from Andreas Eder slipped past the Italian goalkeeper Fanghand into the goal.
In the second half, the German team also showed a solid performance in front of 352 spectators and created some top-class chances. First, Maximilian Kammerer failed to score from a free position against the opponent's goal, before Jakob Mayenschein was able to score the 2-0 goal after a beautiful solo by Stefan Loibl.
The Italians' goal in the middle of the game raised new hopes for their opponents, who should now get into the game better. But the German selection presented itself with great concentration, especially in the defensive game. At the latest, goalkeeper Maximilian Franzreb was the last stop, so that the second World Cup victory could be secured.
The prestigious duel against Austria is on the program next Wednesday (20 p.m.).
Christian Künast, BundesYoung talent trainer: “We won two close encounters and that’s what counts. I have an overall positive impression of the game today: we dominated the game. The Italians then came close again and gained a bit of the upper hand after their goal, but we held on well until the end. Overall, we have to become smarter and more callous.”
David Trinkberger (Sioux City Musketeers): “It was up to us to win the game and we did that, in the end nobody asks how anymore. Of course two or three goals would have been better for self-confidence, but we are finding each other more and more.”
Maximilian Franzreb (Hamburg Freezers): “We played more stable today than against Kazakhstan and deserved to win in the end. We still have to improve the evaluation of opportunities a bit.”
