Kai Wissmann scores twice / Künast: “It was the tough game we expected”
Victory at the start: The U20 national team won the first game at the 2016 IIHF U20 Ice Hockey World Championship in Vienna against newly promoted Kazakhstan 3:2 (0:0, 2:1, 1:1). With his two goals Berlins defender Kai Wissmann played a significant role in the success of the German selection.
Both teams initially started the game cautiously. Despite significantly more share of the game, the German team's chances in the first half of the game were not compelling enough.
In the second half of the game the... DEB-Selection then became more courageous and created good opportunities. Nevertheless, it was Team Kazakhstan that took advantage of a discrepancy in the German defense and scored the first goal of the game.
The answer came promptly. First, Stefan Loibl failed to hit the post, before Kai Wissmann scored the 1:1 with a pass from Andreas Eder in the majority. Another four minutes later, captain Eder himself took advantage of a three-on-one situation and put the German team 2:1 ahead.
Right at the start of the final period, the German team found themselves two men down. But the Germans did not let the score get to 2:2 and increased the pressure. Wissmann redeemed his team with his second goal of the game just two minutes before the end of the match.
Federal Young Talent Trainer Christian Kunast: “Today was the difficult game we expected at the start. We promptly found the right answer after being 0-1 down and even though we lost the thread a bit after taking the 2-1 lead, the effort was right again, especially at the end.”
Kai Wissmann (Eisbären Berlin): “We didn’t show the performance we could have shown today. Ultimately, only the three points count! By now everyone should know that there is no easy opponent here and be forewarned for the next games. For the coming games we have to make sure we stick to our game better and don’t adapt to the opponent.”
